Cyprus: Island Nation in Eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Geographically part of West Asia, its cultural and historical ties align more closely with Southeast Europe, shaping its geopolitical orientation.
Cyprus is the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean, following Sicily and Sardinia. It lies southeast of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, and north of Egypt, positioning it at a strategic crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The capital and largest city, Nicosia, is notable as the world's last divided capital, split between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized only by Turkey). The island remains partitioned by the United Nations Buffer Zone (Green Line), established after the 1974 conflict. Additionally, Cyprus hosts two British Sovereign Base Areas (Akrotiri and Dhekelia), retained after the country's independence in 1960.
Despite its political complexities, Cyprus is a member of the European Union (since 2004) and the Commonwealth, reflecting its diverse historical influences and modern international affiliations.
